What this Kundli shows

The result starts with the ascendant (lagna): the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time and place of birth. Each of the nine grahas used in Vedic astrology follows, namely the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. For each one you see the sign, the degree inside that sign, the house it occupies, its nakshatra with pada and lord, and whether it is moving retrograde.

Below the planets you will find the twelve houses with the sign that fills each one, followed by the five parts of the birth Panchang: tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and weekday. Together these give the basic picture that most Vedic readings begin with.

How to read the chart

Start with the ascendant. Its sign becomes the first house and the other signs follow in order, one sign per house. A planet sitting in the fourth house, for example, is in the fourth sign counted from the ascendant. The Moon sign and Moon nakshatra are often used as a second reference point, which is why they appear near the top of the summary.

Retrograde planets are marked in words, not only with colour. Degrees are shown within the sign, from 0 to 30, so 12°30′ Leo means twelve and a half degrees into Leo. If the birth time is uncertain by more than a few minutes, the ascendant and the house positions may change, while the signs of slower planets usually stay the same.

Calculation settings

Positions use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which is the setting most Indian almanacs follow. Houses are whole signs counted from the ascendant, and Rahu and Ketu are true nodes rather than mean nodes. The local birth time is converted to universal time with the time zone rules in force at that date and place, including daylight saving where it applied.

The weekday in the Panchang follows the local civil calendar day. Traditional Panchangs begin the day at sunrise, so for a birth between midnight and sunrise the weekday shown here can differ from a printed almanac. These results have not yet been compared against published reference charts, so please treat them as a study aid.

Frequently asked questions

What details do I need to make a Kundli?

You need the date of birth, the local clock time of birth and the place of birth. The place gives the latitude, longitude and time zone. If a city is not in the list, you can type the coordinates and the time zone yourself.

Which ayanamsa and house system are used?

The Lahiri ayanamsa with the sidereal zodiac, and whole-sign houses counted from the ascendant. Rahu and Ketu are true nodes.

Why does the weekday differ from my printed Panchang?

This site takes the weekday from the local calendar date. Printed Panchangs start the day at sunrise, so a birth between midnight and sunrise can show a different weekday. Sunrise-based weekdays are planned.

What if I do not know my exact birth time?

Use the closest time you have. The ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours, so the houses are the most sensitive part. Planet signs, especially for slow planets, are much less affected.

Are my birth details saved?

Not on our servers. They are sent once to calculate the chart, are not logged and are not added to the page address. If you enter a name, they are saved only on this device as a profile you can pick again; tick "Don't save" to skip that.
