Kundli Matching: Ashta Kuta, Dasha Kuta and Mangal Dosha
Kundli matching compares two birth charts. This tool gives the Ashta Kuta score out of 36, the Dasha Kuta comparison and a Mangal Dosha check for both people.
Entering two sets of details
Fill in the birth date, local time and place for each person. The two people can be born in different countries; each set of details is converted with the time zone rules of its own place, so you do not need to adjust anything by hand. Ashta Kuta depends mostly on the Moon, which changes nakshatra about once a day, so an approximate time is usually enough for the score. The Mangal Dosha check depends on the houses, and those need a more accurate time. The details are used once for this calculation and are not kept.
What the matching includes
Ashta Kuta, also called Guna Milan, compares the Moon nakshatras and Moon signs of the two people across eight factors: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Each factor carries a fixed number of points, from one for Varna to eight for Nadi, and the total is out of 36.
The result also includes Dasha Kuta, the ten-factor system used mainly in South India (also called Dasa Porutham), which compares the two Moon nakshatras in its own way. A Mangal Dosha check looks at the house position of Mars in each chart. Each part is shown separately so you can see where the result comes from.
How to read the score
Many families treat 18 points or more out of 36 as acceptable, but the total alone is a rough guide. Specific factors, such as Nadi or Bhakoot, are often weighed more heavily, and traditional practice includes several exceptions that cancel a dosha. Look at the factor table, not just the total.
The Mangal Dosha check reports whether Mars falls in one of the houses traditionally named for this dosha. Person 1 is treated as the groom and person 2 as the bride, because the underlying method compares them in that order. Please treat the result as one input among many, and consult a trusted astrologer for decisions.
Calculation settings
Both charts use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. Each person's birth time is converted to universal time with the time zone rules of their own birth place. The matching rules are provided by an established open-source astrology library that we have not yet replaced with our own code.
Different traditions score some factors differently, and some software applies cancellation rules automatically. Small differences from other calculators are therefore expected. These results have not yet been checked against published reference cases.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Guna Milan score?
Many families consider 18 or more out of 36 acceptable. The individual factors and any cancellations matter as much as the total.
Which person is the groom and which is the bride?
Person 1 is treated as the groom and person 2 as the bride. Enter the details in that order for the Mangal Dosha check to read correctly.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi is the factor worth eight points. When both people share the same Nadi, it scores zero, and many traditions treat this as important.
Is Mangal Dosha checked for both people?
Yes. The check is shown for each chart separately.
Why does my score differ from another site?
Traditions differ on some factor rules and on which cancellations to apply automatically. The ayanamsa can also move a Moon near a nakshatra boundary.
