Yogini Dasha Calculator
Yogini Dasha is a shorter cycle of eight periods, each named after a Yogini and linked to a planet. It repeats every 36 years and starts from the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
The eight Yoginis and their planets
Mangala is linked to the Moon and lasts one year. Pingala follows with the Sun for two years, then Dhanya with Jupiter for three, Bhramari with Mars for four, Bhadrika with Mercury for five, Ulka with Saturn for six, Siddha with Venus for seven and Sankata with Rahu for eight. Ketu has no Yogini of its own in this scheme. Traditional writing describes Mangala, Dhanya, Bhadrika and Siddha as gentle periods and the others as more demanding, but the planet's condition in the birth chart is what most astrologers look at first. Read each period together with the house and sign of its planet.
What Yogini Dasha is
The system has eight Yoginis: Mangala, Pingala, Dhanya, Bhramari, Bhadrika, Ulka, Siddha and Sankata. They rule for one to eight years in that order, adding up to a 36-year cycle that repeats through life. Each Yogini is associated with a planet, from the Moon for Mangala to Rahu for Sankata.
Like Vimshottari, the starting Yogini depends on the nakshatra of the Moon at birth, and only part of the first period remains at the moment of birth. Many astrologers use Yogini Dasha alongside Vimshottari to see whether the two point in the same direction.
Reading the result
The table lists each Yogini period with its ruling planet, start and end dates, and its length in years. The periods cover the next fifty years from birth, which is enough to repeat the full cycle once and part of a second time.
Because the cycle is short, a period that felt important in childhood returns in adulthood. Reading the same Yogini in both rounds can be a useful way to compare themes over time. Dates are shown in the time zone of the birth place.
Calculation settings
The Moon's position is sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa and true nodes. The period lengths follow the common scheme of one to eight years per Yogini. The calculation is provided by an established open-source astrology library and has not yet been rewritten in our own engine.
As with any dasha, a small change in birth time shifts the dates slightly, because the Moon moves quickly. These results have not yet been checked against published reference charts.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a Yogini Dasha cycle?
36 years. The eight Yoginis rule for one to eight years each, then the cycle starts again.
How is the first Yogini chosen?
From the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth. The part of the first period still left depends on the Moon's position inside that nakshatra.
Can I use Yogini and Vimshottari together?
Yes. Many astrologers read both and give more weight to themes that appear in each.
How many years does the result cover?
Fifty years from birth.
